This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Tlingit and Ts’msyen languages. We hear Ben Spencer talk about the month of September in Ts’msyen and two conversations in Tlingit: we hear Marge Dutson with Marsha Hotch and Ethel Makinen with Anita Wright.  In between segments, we hear songs in Haida, Tlingit, and Yupik.

 

Airs Wednesdays after the 8 PM news on KCAW Sitka and kcaw.org,  Mondays at 1 PM on KSTK Wrangell and kstk.org, as well as Thursdays after the 10 PM news on KRBD Ketchikan and krbd.org.

K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a FM radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour radio celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation.
