This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Haida, Ts’msyen, and Tlingit languages.  We hear Robert Cogo tell a story in Haida, John Reese speaking Ts’msyen, and Ruth Demmert speaking with Marsha Hotch in Tlingit.  In between segments, hear songs by Dave Nelson III (Ts’msyen), Dr Erma Lawrence (Haida), Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson (Haida), Cheryl Naomi Sampson (Ts’msyen), and Guujaaw (Haida).  Hosted by K’yuuhlgáansii (kyooth-GAWN-see, “Place of One’s Own”, Haida) on Lingit Aani (Tlingit land) in Sitka, Alaska.

K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a FM radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour radio celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation.
