This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Tlingit language. We will hear teacher Virginia Oliver and student Mia Wiederspoon from Wrangell. We will hear a production of “The Town Bear and The Forest Bear” with Ethel Makinen. We will also hear the end of a conversation between Lorraine Adams and Vincent Johnson.
In between segments, hear two songs by Sondra Segundo (Haida) as well as songs by Dave Nelson III (Ts’msyen), Guujaaw (Haida), Pamyua (Yupik), Khu.éex’ (Tlingit), and Dionne Brady-Howard (Tlingit). Hosted by K’yuuhlgáansii (kyooth-GAWN-see, “Place of One’s Own”, Haida) on Lingit Aani (Tlingit land) in Sitka, Alaska.

K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a FM radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour radio celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation.
