This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Tlingit and Haida languages. We hear a conversation between Lorraine Adams and Vincent Johnson in Tlingit and we hear Linda Schrack and Ben Young speak in Haida.  In between segments, we hear songs by Sondra Segundo (Haida), Dave Nelson III (Ts’msyen), Mungo Martin (Haida), Charlie Joseph (Tlingit), Khu.éex’ (Tlingit), Robert Davidson (Haida), and Dionne Brady-Howard (Tlingit).

K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a FM radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour radio celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation.
