This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Ts’msyen and the Tlingit languages. We’ll hear Doug Brown read a story in Ts’msyen and we hear a conversation between Anita Lafferty and Lillian Austin in Tlingit. In between segments, we hear songs by Robert Davidson (Haida), Dave Nelson III (Ts’msyen), Khu.éex’ (Tlingit), Charlie Joseph (Tlingit), Sondra Segundo (Haida), Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson (Haida), and Roby Littlefield (Tlingit). K’yuuhlgáansii (Haida) hosts from Lingit Aani (Tlingit Land) in Sitka, Alaska.

K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a FM radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour radio celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation.
