This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Tlingit language with a conversation between Anita Lafferty and Lillian Austin. In between, we’ll hear songs by Dave Nelson III (Tsimshian), the band Khu.éex’ (Tlingit), Charlie Joseph (Tlingit), Robert Davidson (Haida), and Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson (Haida). K’yuuhlgáansii hosts.
K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a FM radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour radio celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation. Listen Live Thursdays at l0:06 PM on KCAW Sitka FM and KCAW.org or Fridays at 9 PM on KSTK Wrangell FM and KSTK.org.
