This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Tsimshian and Tlingit languages.  In Tsimshian, we hear the story “Little Porcupine Walks About” (Porcupine and Beaver) by Violet Robinson.  We will hear two conversations in Tlingit;  George Ramos with Lena Farkas and David Katzeek with George Davis.  In between, we hear songs in Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian.

K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a FM radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour radio celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation.
