K’yuuhlgaansii hin uu dii kuyaang. In the Haida language, my name is K’yuuhlgaansii (“Place of one’s own”). I am of the Sgajuuga.ahl Clan–Haida eagle moiety with beaver, frog, and sculpin crests. In April 2019, I started a radio show called “Gunalchéesh!” on KCAW Sitka, Alaska FM radio. “Gunalchéesh!” is a weekly one hour celebration of Alaska Native languages, especially the endangered Tlingit and Haida. Listeners hear conversations, songs, stories, and much more in Alaska Native languages without much translation.
This week on “Gunalchéesh!”, we feature the Tlingit language with two conversations, Ethel Makinen with Anita Wright and Ruth Demmert with Marsha Hotch. We will also hear songs in Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian, and Yupik.
Listen Live on Thursday nights from 10:06 to 11 PM Alaska Time on KCAW Sitka FM or KCAW.org and/or Friday nights at 9 PM on KSTK Wrangell FM or KSTK.org.
